Chapter 213
From the the clock tower, I marveled at the sprawling expanse of Lorkdie estate beneath me. The sight was truly awe-inspiring. The majority of the structures stood no taller than three stories, granting an unobstructed view of the entire cityscape from this five-story perch.
Under normal circumstances, a regiment of soldiers would stand vigilant at its entrance. However, in the grip of the epidemic, a solitary rope sufficed as a feeble barrier.
“Lorkdie is truly immense,” I murmured, unable to contain my astonishment. Even Vanmon, which I had considered to be quite sizable, paled in comparison. My eyes meticulously scanned every nook and cranny of the estate, determined not to overlook any detail of this magnificent domain.
As I continued my observation, a small white bird caught my attention as it gracefully soared towards us, breaking the stillness of the scene.
It was amusing how it was coming towards people without hesitation. As I was watching astonishingly, the bird sat on Adman’s arm like it was used to it.
“It’s a messenger bird. It seemed like my mother has sent it.”
She seemed worried if we had met safely. To think of using a messenger bird while being invaded by the Empire army. She could be accused of colluding with the Lucretian army.
“Ah.”
I was worried about Mrs. Vanmon, but Adman’s face turned dark after reading the message.
“What is it?”
Adman clenched his eyes for a moment and gave the message to me. But I couldn’t decipher the secret message.
“I’m told that similar thing that happened to Lorkdie is happening all around the kingdom. They’ve already confirmed five places.”
I felt my heart drop.
“Is that true?”
Ravis and Dylan were also in shock. They took the message from my hand, but it seemed like they realized they couldn’t read it.
“Where are the places that were confirmed?”
“Dajerie, Varos, Roman, Dahalas, and… Vanmon.”
I felt dizzy. It felt like something was dragging me to the ground.
“Saintess!”
Dylan quickly held me as I was stumbling. I was barely able to stand.
“Vanmon. Rian, Rian is soon coming back, and if Piett shows up there… No.”
I mumbled. Ravis shook my shoulders.
“Get hold of yourself, Iona. His Majesty isn’t the one to be easily taken down.”
“Ah.”
I quickly regained my composure. He was right. No disease can pierce Ridrian. If anything, he’d be the one beating down demons and laughing. I calmed down.
“Thank you, Ravis.”
“It’s nothing. Anyways, this no longer can be solved by us. I think we should report to the Pope and ask for assistance. Do you think you can do it, Iona?”
He knew well that I wasn’t truly accepting myself as a saintess. So, he was asking whether I could ask the Pope to solve this situation as one.
I bit my lips. This was no longer a problem of whether I accept myself as a saintess or not. I was doing something as a person who realized the demons are invading.
“I can.”
I nodded and turned to Dylan.
“Dylan, do you still have the orb connected to His Holiness?”
“The orb? Ah, you’re talking about communication orb.”
Dylan took out a small orb the size of a coin.
“Oh my, saintess Lesprey, welcome.”
The Pope still accepted my call looking kind. He seemed to have yet to hear the news of the demonization, as he looked relaxed. But as I explained the situation and Ravis and Dylan backed it up. His face started to turn dark. His old face looked a few times older.
“Oh my, to think demons are terrorizing the land again. Theres would not be pleased.”
He closed his eyes. He seemed to be thinking so we waited for his next words.
“I understand the situation. I’ll send priests with strong divine power and crusaders to the five cities right away.”
“Thank you for your quick assistance.”
“It’s nothing. It’s demons out of all things. This is a danger for the entire continent, no, the entire mankind. It’s only the right thing to do. I’ll activate the emergency state and soon share the situation with you.”
“Yes, please do so.”
We were able to relax a little as the Pope accepted the situation quickly. I bowed politely then hung up.
“It’s great His Holiness is helping so quickly.”
“He’s always concerned about the group and the future of mankind.”
If I remember from the original story, the Pope was someone replaced by Ridrian as he took the throne, so he seemed quite normal.
‘Well, there is no use for just the Pope being so transparent.’
That must be why they wanted to take me so badly. It’ll be much easier to lead the group if I was there.
‘Even if I knew that, I wouldn’t have changed my mind.’
I shook my head thinking about the cardinals. Ravis mumbled then.
“It’s not good. The sun is down already.”
The night was coming. Adman and Dylan also looked serious.
“It seems like the day is getting shorter as the moons are colliding together.”
“We should hurry. The night is when the demons are most active.”
But before he even finished, there were cries all over the town.
[Kuwaaaaaa!]
But it didn’t end with one.
[Kwuuaang]
[Kuwaaaa!]
Bunch of demons started to pour down on the street instantly. It didn’t take long for the entire estate to be covered in ominous feeling.
“Oh my god, the demons!”
