CHapter 3.2
At the hands of those who had been guarding the room with him, he was beaten to the point where he was paralyzed. Blood gushed out of his nose and mouth, but it wasn’t as ghastly compared to the way his arms and legs were bent in ways they shouldn’t be.
At first, desperate screams and apologies ensued from the man, but in the end, there was only silence. The horrible sight was so vividly etched in her mind that she couldn’t forget it.
“I don’t care who these people are,” he said once.
“Even if they die?” Hae-gang had asked.
Her eyes fluttered for an instant. She wasn’t the only one who was scared of this man. Even his men were afraid of their boss. And everyone here knew. No matter how much she threatened to kill herself, every word that came out of him had more weight than everything she did. ‘He’ was a person who never spoke in vain.
–I can’t leave you alone with those who let you die.
In shock, Hae-gang couldn’t close her mouth. She wanted to believe that the ‘he’ on the other side of the phone was a different person from the one with whom she had lived for years.
Even though he wasn’t there with her, no one could open their mouths carelessly because of his palpable presence.
When she looked up, the guard’s gaze was upon her. The room was dead silent, but they could feel the suffocating pressure.
Hae-gang felt as if she was near her limit. So this time, she tried to think of how to save herself. She guessed she was still in less pain.
Perhaps after today, there would be less cutlery in front of her. So was the bowl, and so was the fork. On the day she threw a chair and broke the bathroom mirror, all the glass in this place was replaced.
The needle fell helplessly from her loosened grip. In the end, she failed to achieve her goal again this time. “You are really crazy,” she muttered helplessly.
A soft laugh came over the phone.
She was stupid to expect that his humanity would remain.
Hae-gang nervously went into the bedroom and put on a blanket. The sound of his laughter constantly echoed in her ears.
* * *
Hae-gang’s depression did not last long. Her next opportunity came sooner than she expected.
She lay blankly in bed and looked up at the blue-gray sky given to her when a loud ringing sound hit her ears. It was a fire alarm.
She was surprised by the sound and pulled the curtains. The sky, seen through the window, was already dark and indistinguishable from the black smoke. Thanks to this, it was difficult to estimate how big the fire was.
She stared at the window without even moving, and then the smoke that filled the night sky began to be distinguished. A smile crept up on Hae-gang’s hardened face.
There was a fire in the hotel where she stayed.
For a long time, there was nothing to think about. Hae-gang, who had left the bedroom, saw the restless guards in front of the door.
She found one of them holding a cell phone and quickly took it. A thin cardigan was already in her opposite hand.
“Hey!”
“Do you have time to call him now? If he says no, are you going to die here with me?” Hae-gang taunted the guard.
“But…”
“I won’t run away, so open the door and go!”
The guards found her suspicious. Their suspicions were justified. She wanted to escape from this life so much that she would rather die than be imprisoned, and she constantly displayed her will.
But she didn’t push the guard any further. She has learned that silence can be another form of pressure. Instead, she predicted the possibility of success in her head.
‘He’ said he was going on a long business trip to Dubai. She did not know how long it would take, but returning immediately was surely not easy. If that had been easy, he wouldn’t have had a business trip in the first place. He couldn’t bear to be separated from her in the first place.
So, this was truly the best opportunity given to her. She didn’t know if she would ever be able to escape, or where she would go, but she needed to act.
As she listened closely, she could hear cries and footsteps faintly. How many people are heading out? It was the first time that someone other than her had caused a disturbance.
Hae-gang put on the cardigan and watched the guard, still hesitating. It wasn’t her who was running out of time.
