Chapter 23.1
This is Yoon Sun-Woo, the CEO of Moon-Ik Steel, who greeted Woo-jin over the phone.
“!!!”
As Woo-jin spoke, her eyes darted toward Woo-jin’s phone. Hae-gang was caught in the act of eavesdropping, and Woo-jin immediately lowered his voice, but it was already too late.
Hae-gang wondered whether her facial expression would reflect crumpled paper or the color of spoiled food. She expected her face to contort like that of a person facing negative things, but surprisingly, she maintained her smile, unchanging like a plaster cast.
Woo-jin noticed the strange change in Hae-gang’s expression and missed his opportunity to greet her.
“CEO Min?” Yoon Sun Woo asked, breaking the silence.
“Oh, yes. Mr. Yoon. Go ahead,” Woo-jin replied, heading into the study and closing the door behind him, leaving Hae-gang behind in the dining room.
Woo-jin stood still, concerned about what Hae-gang may have heard.
As the door closed, Woo-Jin could finally focus on the call.
“Did you have dinner?” Yoon Sun-woo asked.
“Yes, just now. What made you call CEO Yoon?” Hae-gang replied.
“Oh, it’s nothing. I heard that Ji-Woo visited CEO Min’s office. She said something harsh, but I think I should apologize,” Yoon Sun-woo explained.
Woo-jin raised his eyebrow, feeling suspicious. He swept his hair back, revealing a small crease between his white eyebrows. He had reason to be suspicious; the call wasn’t taking place at an opportune time.
Ji-Woo, the representative of Rudy, the best hotel in Korea, was Sun-woo’s younger sister, which made her seem incapable of handling the situation on her own. While Woo-jin didn’t think Sun-Woo was a calculating person, he wondered if there was a reason for him to make this call, besides saving her sister’s face. His eyes briefly flicked towards the door, or more precisely, towards the other room.
“You don’t have to do this, but thank you for calling anyway,” Woo-jin said, his eyes gleaming with a hint of suspicion.
“Don’t mention it. I read the article. Congratulations on your wedding. Let’s have a meal with your wife sometime. I’m so sorry to move on like this,” Sun-woo replied.
Woo-jin smiled coolly, leaning against the desk in the study. He wondered if it was just a greeting or if there was something Sun-woo wanted to check.
Whatever the reason, the answer was clear.
“I appreciate the suggestion, but I don’t think we can eat with my wife. She’s a bit of a homebody, and maybe because of the small scar on her face, she doesn’t like meeting people,” he explained.
For the first time, Sun Woo didn’t reply right away. There was a long pause before his voice came over the line.
“The scar, you mean,” he said.
“Yes, it’s just a little blemish to me,” Woo-jin replied.
His comment caused a longer silence than before. This time, Woo-jin spoke first, feeling that the pause would last a while.
“Anyway, I’ll accept your apology. Would it be okay to have a meal with just me sometime later?”
“Sure, let’s set a date,” Sun-Woo replied.
“Oh, I think this week will be difficult because I have to go on my honeymoon. If you let me know a time after that, I’ll schedule it,” Woo-jin said.
The mention of the word “honeymoon” had been intended to gauge Sun-woo’s reaction.
To Woo-jin’s surprise, Sun-woo continued the conversation in a relaxed manner.
He asked, “Where are you planning to go?”
“I haven’t decided yet, but I want to go to a place where my wife can relax,” Ji-woo replied.
Sun-woo then recommended the Maldives, adding that he had gone there for his own honeymoon and that it had been great.
Woo-jin suddenly remembered an article he had read two years earlier: “Moon Ik’s Tragedy” was still ongoing, and both of Moon Ik’s daughters-in-law had passed away within a few months of each other.
He straightened up from his leaning position and walked toward the door, saying, “I’ll put it on the list.”
