Chapter 67.1
Chapter 67.1
Perhaps because Lee Yoon-gun’s obsessive messages had been so horrifying, even Kwon Jae-heon’s ordinary text made her heart feel warm and fuzzy.
“Lee Yoon-gun was the abnormal one.”
If she didn’t answer his call, he would keep ringing until she did, and if that didn’t work, he’d leave hundreds of messages. That couldn’t possibly be normal. Ever since she changed her number and his attempts to contact her stopped, her life had become peaceful. It was a relief not to be harassed by him anymore, but in a way, it made her uneasy too.
“He even stood up to the Congressman.”
The only reason she’d been able to walk out of that house in one piece was because of Kwon Jae-heon.
The problem was, that peace came with an expiration date. Now that Lee Yi-taek knew she was questioning the circumstances of her abduction, he wasn’t going to let it slide. If Kwon Jae-heon, her shield, disappeared from her life, she couldn’t even imagine what Yi-taek would do to her.
“Would he really go so far as to kill me?”
Goyo let out a quiet sigh, resting her chin on her hand as she gazed out the window.
The city lights at dusk were a sight to behold. Between the dense forest of buildings, cars packed the roads like tiny toys. The glowing skyscrapers and endless lines of headlights lit up the city in dazzling splendor.
“It’s beautiful,” she thought.
Not quite like the view from Jae-heon’s office, though.
She suddenly recalled the way he had proudly shown off the nightscape from his office, and a soft chuckle slipped out.
He had every right to be proud. The KJ Tower, standing tall in the heart of the city, offered a breathtaking view from its 60th floor.
The twinkling lights of the city stretched endlessly, and fireworks burst across the sky above, a cascade of color and motion.
The message that had shimmered across the night sky, cutting through the fireworks:
“Happy New Year.”
It was such a dreamlike scene, she couldn’t even tell if it had been real or just a fantasy. Seeing a view like that every day would probably make everything else pale in comparison.
Bzzz—
As if he knew she’d been thinking about him, a message from Jae-heon came through. Goyo’s face instantly lit up as she checked her phone.
[Something came up last minute. Looks like I’ll be lateㅜㅜ]
Her mood dipped as soon as she read his text.
“He must be really busy.”
Pouting a little, Goyo quickly typed out a reply. Even though she was disappointed, she wrote a message telling him to take his time and finish his work before coming.
Almost immediately, a reply came back.
[Go ahead and eat first. I’ll wrap things up and be there soon.]
Just that one warm message had her smiling again. It was silly, but her sunken mood lifted in an instant.
“Ms. Lee Goyo?”
A strange voice interrupted her moment of quiet joy.
Because she had never had a good experience with someone recognizing her, Goyo instinctively froze. She forced herself to lift her stiff neck and see who had ruined her little moment of happiness.
Of course, her gut feeling hadn’t been wrong.
“What a surprise seeing you here, Ms. Goyo. Are you here for dinner?”
The man approaching her with far too much familiarity was none other than Prosecutor Ma Soon-jin, whom she’d encountered at the KJ year-end party.
The same man who had handed her a note with his number and told her to call him—one of the main reasons her head had been a mess lately.
Tap, tap. His leather shoes stopped in front of her.
“What, not even a hello?”
Ma Soon-jin looked down at her with a sheepish smile.
Goyo felt deeply uncomfortable. They weren’t on the kind of terms where she’d be happy to see him or exchange greetings. As far as she was concerned, Ma Soon-jin was nothing but suspicious.
For some reason, he was digging into a case from 15 years ago; one that had already been closed. A case involving a leading presidential candidate.
That case had officially ended with the death of the kidnapper, Lee Chul-woo. Goyo and Yoon-gun’s testimony had exposed Lee Chul-woo’s heinous actions. No one had questioned it, until Ma Soon-jin came along.
Goyo’s heart began to pound hard in her chest. Before she could even register what she was afraid of, goosebumps spread across her arms.
Why was he approaching her again? What was he trying to find out?
“We met not too long ago, and I even introduced myself. Surely you haven’t forgotten me?”
As if she could.
She still had the note he’d slipped into her bag. Every time a new memory surfaced, she found herself staring at his number on that slip of paper, torn between curiosity and fear.
She’d picked up her phone countless times, but had never managed to press the call button.
‘Can I trust this man?’
