Chapter 3.2
Chapter 3.2
“Please, snap out of it. It’s not the first time you’ve heard this. If you keep interfering with us like this, we’ll put you in jail for obstructing official duties.”
The police shouted, raising their voices. Even after filing complaints with the police station and going to the police headquarters, most responses were similar.
Seoryeong couldn’t understand why everyone was saying she made a wrong judgment. She couldn’t understand.
She knew because they communicated, loved, and lived together. Kim Hyun was not that kind of person. It couldn’t be him.
“Detective, please, one more investigation…”
That’s when a man with tousled hair bit his lips and spoke.
“Ms. Han Seoryeong, I checked, and you have a record of mental health treatment.”
“…!”
“Isn’t it better to go to a hospital instead of doing this here?”
Even through her hazy vision, she could feel hostile glares. The man, chewing on his words, made Seoryeong feel like she had been slapped.
“Based on the contents of the report, initially, you claimed that your husband was bleeding. Do you want to reopen the investigation? If we do, you’ll be the first to get hurt. We’re not covering for Ms. Han Seoryeong out of pity; making false statements is not taken lightly. So, stop this here and go to the hospital first.”
“….”
“Enough now, face reality!” Another police interjected.
Seoryeong felt like she was abandoned in a frozen wilderness again. The cold permeated to her bones. She had no parents, no friends—there was no one to share this moment of agony with her. It was solely her burden to bear.
“Don’t you have to live your own life too? How long will you cling to something that’s already over?!”
“It’s not over yet…” Seoryeong muttered absentmindedly.
Because I haven’t finished anything yet. Because I simply can’t understand. Your words make no sense to me!
Seoryeong struck her chest, turning it into a pit of frustration.
She didn’t want to hear that her husband was a scammer. What she wanted to know was her his whereabouts.
She just wanted to know where he was. If he was alive, if he wasn’t hurt, if nothing serious had happened—those kinds of things.
Because they were a couple, because she was his wife, so she could worry about such things.
She just wanted to find him. If only she could find him, she would have reported it sooner, much sooner…!
Tears, tangled and messy, lost their direction. Reporting a phantom who disappeared without a trace was impossible from the start.
Unable to distinguish objects on her own and unable to go far without a cane, she had no time to feel sad. Even when she received a diagnosis that she was nearing complete blindness, she was taken care of by her sweet husband.
On that day, she had sex with Kim Hyun for the first time.
Their tongues thrust, their legs intertwined, and their bodies filled with hot sensations.
Even when she was diagnosed as nearly blind, Kim Hyun was there. Overwhelmed by the joy of their lips meeting and the bare flesh touch, Seoryeong managed to resist her unhappiness over her misfortune.
She wasn’t able to see him, but touching him was enough.
Kim Hyun was a person with that kind of power. He was a man who could turn even sadness into memories.
So, how could she give up on him now?
***
Before condemning, I wanted to bring you back. Before hating you, I wanted to ask. I want to find you. I want to reclaim the only thing that belonged to me in my life. But…
“Sister.”
An unfamiliar voice interrupted her thoughts. Only then did Seoryeong realize that she was standing in front of the statue of the Virgin Mary.
“…!”
… Strange. She blinked her eyes quickly as if to clear her vision. The blurry piece that should have been blurred out seemed perfectly visible.
It would probably be much clearer if I got closer.
It was a sensation she had never felt since the symptoms started. ‘It seems like I can see.’ The feeling was mind-boggling.
She couldn’t believe it. She wiped her eyes and approached the statue closer.
“Sister, your nose is bleeding!”
The face of the priest turned pale.
“Ah…” She reacted absentmindedly and quickly tore off an advertisement flyer stuck to the statue of the Virgin Mary, using it to wipe her nose.
“You don’t look fine at all. Oh, really. Child, you look unwell.”
“It’s okay, thank you.”
She turned around hastily. Then, holding a cane, she looked back at the priest.
“Father, do you really believe in things that you can’t see?”
Even with such a blunt question, the priest was not surprised. Seoryeong looked hesitant and embarrassed, which made her lips quiver. Still, she kept her posture straight and looked at the priest in the eye.
“I’m sorry to say this, but you might have been deceived. Don’t become a fool like me later on; open your eyes as soon as possible.”
“Sister, you don’t have to see to believe.” The priest replied calmly.
As Seoryeong breathed heavily, she nervously swept her fallen hair. The sticky anxiety and distrust, which had stuck to her without her realizing when exploded like an unstoppable torrent. She couldn’t stop talking.
“I don’t know, I don’t know, that’s why…!”
Seoryeong grabbed the cane and bent her waist halfway as if retching. When she coughed out dry coughs, her dry throat felt like burning.
“I fell in love without even knowing his face… I thought that the warmest and biggest hand I held would be my salvation. I couldn’t help but like him. Of course…! I’ve only held the hands of sick patients, so it was the first time holding someone elses’s hands like that!”
“…”
“There was never a person like him in my world…”
She wiped her eyes now, not her nose. The inside of her eyes felt hot. Simultaneously, words that she never wanted to utter poured out of her.
“He wondered if I slept well, if I chewed my food thoroughly. Now, I don’t know what to do…”
“…”
“For me, that person was a miracle.”
